Questions about word counter

How are words counted?
By runs of non-space characters, which is how essay and assignment limits are counted. A hyphenated word counts as one; a number counts as a word.
Does it count characters with or without spaces?
Both are shown. Form fields and SMS limits usually count with spaces; some publishers count without, so check which the limit means before trimming.
How is reading time worked out?
At about 200 words a minute, which is average for adult reading on screen. Technical material runs slower and should be treated as a floor rather than an estimate.
