Most small businesses do not need an SEO agency to get started. They need to fix a short list of basics that most of their competitors have never touched. In a town like Hanumangarh, Bathinda or Bikaner, doing those basics properly is often enough to show up above businesses that have been around for twenty years.

This is the checklist we use when we start SEO for a local business. Everything here is free or nearly free. Work through it in order, because the early items bring results fastest.

First, understand how people find local businesses

When someone searches "dentist near me" or "cake shop Hanumangarh", Google usually shows three kinds of results:

  1. Ads at the top, marked "Sponsored".
  2. The map pack: three businesses with a map, stars, hours and a call button.
  3. Regular results: websites, directories like Justdial, and social pages.

For local businesses, the map pack is where most calls come from, and it is driven mainly by your Google Business Profile, not your website. That is why step one is not the website at all.

Step 1: Claim and complete your Google Business Profile

Go to business.google.com and claim or create your listing. Then fill in everything, because a complete profile is one of the clearest signals you control:

  • Business name: your real name as it appears on your board. Do not stuff keywords like "Best Mobile Shop Hanumangarh"; it can get your listing suspended.
  • Primary category: the most specific one that fits. "Dental clinic" beats "Doctor". Add secondary categories for other things you do.
  • Address and service area: exact, and matching what you write everywhere else.
  • Phone number: one that someone actually answers.
  • Hours: correct, including special hours for festivals.
  • Photos: outside of the shop (so people recognise it), inside, products, team. Add new ones every month.
  • Products or services: with short descriptions and prices where you can.
  • Description: plain words about what you do, which areas you serve and what makes you different.

Step 2: Build a steady flow of genuine reviews

Reviews affect both your ranking and whether people call. The number, how recent they are and whether you reply all matter. What works:

  • Ask every happy customer, at the moment they are happy: when the work is delivered or the bill is paid.
  • Make it one tap. Get your review link from your Business Profile and send it on WhatsApp. Turn the same link into a QR code with any free QR generator and stick it on the counter.
  • Reply to every review, good and bad, within a few days. A calm, polite reply to a bad review often impresses readers more than a five-star one.

Never buy reviews or post fake ones. Google removes them, can suspend listings, and customers can usually tell.

Step 3: Keep your name, address and phone consistent

Search engines cross-check your details across the web: your website, Google, Justdial, IndiaMART, Facebook, Instagram and local directories. If one says "Shop No. 12, Main Market" and another says "Near Bus Stand", and a third has your old number, it weakens trust. Pick one exact format and use it everywhere. Update old listings when you move or change numbers.

Step 4: Make your website fast on a phone

Most of your visitors are on mobile, often on patchy 4G. Google measures real loading experience through Core Web Vitals, and slow sites also simply lose visitors. Test your site at PageSpeed Insights and look at the mobile score. Common fixes:

  • Compress images. A photo straight from a phone can be 4 MB. On a website it should usually be under 200 KB. Use WebP where possible.
  • Remove what you do not need: sliders, heavy animations, unused plugins, chat widgets that load before the page.
  • Use decent hosting. The cheapest shared hosting is often the slowest part of a site.

Step 5: Give every page a clear title and description

The page title is the blue link in Google, and it is one of the strongest on-page signals. Every page should have its own. A good formula for local businesses:

Service + city | Business name, for example: "Root Canal Treatment in Hanumangarh | Sharma Dental Clinic".

  • Keep titles under about 60 characters so they do not get cut off.
  • Write a meta description of about 150 characters that tells people why to click: price, timing, a benefit.
  • Use one clear H1 heading on each page that says what the page is about.

Our free SEO checker shows the title, description and headings of any page in seconds.

Step 6: Create one page for each main service

If a clinic does root canals, braces and implants but only has a "Services" page that lists them, Google has one page to rank for three different searches. Give each important service its own page with:

  • What it is, in simple words
  • Who it is for and what the process looks like
  • Price or price range, if you can share it
  • Common questions with honest answers
  • Photos of real work
  • A clear call or WhatsApp button

Do not create near-identical pages for every town by swapping the city name. Google treats that as thin, "doorway" content. One strong page per service, plus one genuine page for each city you truly serve, works better.

Step 7: Answer the questions customers already ask you

Every question you answer on the phone is a search someone is typing into Google. "How much does braces cost?", "Is this course available on weekends?", "Do you deliver to Pilibanga?" Write the answers on your website as an FAQ or short articles. This helps with normal search and with AI answers in Google and ChatGPT, which like to quote clear, direct answers.

Tips for writing them:

  • Put the direct answer in the first sentence, then explain.
  • Use the words customers use, not industry jargon.
  • Include real numbers where you can: price ranges, timings, distances.

Step 8: Add structured data

Structured data (schema markup) is code that tells Google facts about your business in a format it reads easily: your business type, address, hours, services, FAQs. It can help your listing show extra details in search results. On WordPress, SEO plugins handle much of it. On custom sites your developer adds it. You can check any page with Google's free Rich Results Test.

Step 9: Connect Google Search Console

Google Search Console is free and shows you which searches bring people to your site, which pages are indexed, and what errors Google found. Submit your sitemap there. Check it once a month. It tells you more about your SEO than most paid tools.

Links from other websites still matter, and local ones matter most for local search. Realistic sources for a small business:

  • Local business associations and trade bodies
  • Suppliers and brands you stock (many have "where to buy" pages)
  • Local news sites, when you do something newsworthy
  • Schools, events or charities you sponsor
  • Quality directories relevant to your industry

Avoid paid link packages that promise "1000 backlinks". They are usually spam and can hurt you.

What not to waste money on

  • Guaranteed rankings. Nobody controls Google. Anyone promising page one in a week is lying.
  • Keyword stuffing. Repeating "best shop in Hanumangarh" twenty times makes the page worse, not better.
  • Buying followers or reviews. It does nothing for search and damages trust.
  • Dozens of thin pages. Ten great pages beat a hundred copied ones.

How long does SEO take?

Google Business Profile improvements can show in the map results within a few weeks. Website rankings for local searches usually move within 30 to 60 days of fixing the basics. Competitive searches take 3 to 6 months or longer. SEO is slow at the start and then keeps paying, which is the opposite of ads. We compare the two in detail in SEO vs Google Ads for local businesses.

A simple monthly SEO routine

  1. Add five new photos to your Google Business Profile.
  2. Post one update or offer on the profile.
  3. Ask every happy customer for a review, and reply to all new reviews.
  4. Add or improve one page or FAQ on your website.
  5. Check Search Console for errors and new search terms.

That is about two hours a month. Done consistently for six months, it puts most local businesses ahead of their competitors.
