Most quiz apps die in a week. People take one, share it once and forget it. We wanted to see what it takes to build one that people actually send to each other, so we built Fake or Fam: you answer 10 questions about yourself, share one link, and your friends (or your partner) take the quiz. Their score shows who really knows you and who is just faking it.

This is the honest build story: the idea, the decisions we made, what the app does, and what we would tell anyone planning a quiz or social app in India. You can try the live app at fake-fame.vercel.app and see the project on our case studies page.

The idea in one line

"Find your fake friends." The whole product fits in that sentence, and that was deliberate. A quiz that spreads has to be explained in the time it takes to read a WhatsApp message. If the idea needs a paragraph, nobody forwards it.

The loop is simple:

  1. You answer 10 questions about yourself: your favourite street food, your dream date, the little things only a close friend would know.
  2. You get one link and send it to your friends on WhatsApp, Instagram or Snapchat.
  3. Each friend takes the quiz as if they were guessing your answers. Every question shows right or wrong straight away.
  4. They get a score. You see who knows you best, and you can block the ones who clearly do not.

Two modes: Friends and Couples

Friendship and romance are different kinds of curiosity, so we gave each its own world instead of one generic quiz.

Friends

Sky blue, playful and a little cheeky. Questions are about taste, habits and memories. The tone is "kaun sach me jaanta hai?" with no pressure.

Couples (18+)

Switch the toggle at the top and the whole app turns rose. The questions become romantic: your dream date, a pet name, the couple trip you would take. Scores become labels like "Soulmate 9/10". The mode is clearly marked adults-only (18+), and the content stays romantic and non-explicit.

Both modes live in the same app and use the same link flow, so building the second one cost far less than building a separate product.

Design choices that mattered

Mobile first, because that is where the link opens

A quiz link is opened from a chat, on a phone, usually with one hand. We designed the narrow phone screen first and let the desktop version be a centred phone-width column. Big buttons, short questions and one action per screen.

Characters instead of stock illustrations

Two hand-drawn mascots, Pip and Boo, give the app a personality people remember, and they make a screenshot look like Fake or Fam and nothing else.

Language people actually type in

The app works in English, Hindi and Hinglish. Most friends in India chat in a mix, and a quiz in stiff, formal English feels like a form. Letting people pick Hinglish made the whole thing feel like a conversation.

Instant feedback on every question

Right or wrong appears the moment you tap. Waiting until the end to see how you did kills the fun. The short loop of tap, reaction, next question is what makes people finish all 10.

Privacy: keep less data

A quiz about your friends and your partner is personal, so we kept data to a minimum. Fake or Fam stores only nicknames, and only for 90 days. Collecting less is also less to secure and less to explain, which is a good trade for an app like this.

If you are building any app that touches personal answers, decide what you do not need to store before you decide what you do. We covered the same thinking for businesses in our guide to WhatsApp AI chatbots in India.

Built with Next.js

Fake or Fam is built with Next.js and runs on Vercel. We chose it for the same reasons we pick it for client websites: pages load fast on mobile networks, it is easy to ship small changes, and a link opens quickly even on a slow connection. For a product that depends on people tapping a link in a chat, the first second matters. If you are weighing options for your own project, our web development service page explains how we choose.

Launching with a Reel

A quiz needs people to find it, so we made a 20 second vertical Reel for Instagram. It asks one question, "Dost ho ya partner, kaun tumhe sach me jaanta hai?", then shows the real app: a friends question, the right answer lighting up, the switch to the rose Couples theme, the Soulmate score, and the real toggle flipping at the end.

Two decisions made it work:

  • Show the real product. Every screen in the video is the actual app, not a mock-up, so what people see is what they get when they tap the link.
  • A natural Hindi voiceover. The first voice we tried sounded robotic, so we replaced it with a natural Hindi female voice. The tone of the voice decides whether people keep watching.

You can watch the video in the case study on our case studies page.

What we learned

  • One sentence beats ten features. If you cannot describe the product in one line a friend could forward, simplify it.
  • Build for the share, not the visit. The most important screen in a viral app is the one that produces the link.
  • Personality is a feature. Characters, tone and language matter as much as any technical addition.
  • Keep data small. Nicknames and a 90-day limit make the app easier to trust and easier to run.
  • Launch where the audience already is. A short Reel in Hinglish reaches the people who will take the quiz far better than a launch post on a tech site.
